The Pilgrim’s Progress¬†Accurate Revised Text

This Accurate Revised Text (210 pages) retains Bunyan’s distinctive clarity of style while offering contemporary smoothness without being racy. Based upon the definitive Oxford Press text of 1960 by Wharey and Sharrock, particular attention has been given to the maintenance of the author’s doctrine and purposes. A select variety of archaisms has been retained, with modern equivalent terms in brackets, since these have gained a particular quaintness and timeless quality. Chapter divisions also contribute toward ease of comprehension along with numerous classic character illustrations.

The Outlined Study Manual

Developed over a number of years, The Outlined Study Manual ( 272 pages) that Dr. Horner uses in teaching The Pilgrim’s Progress has proved most effective in communicating Bunyan’s classic allegory. When seminar members use the same Accurate Revised Text from which Dr. Horner is teaching, it is far easier to follow along than if each person used their own version. The added parallel outline and graphic illustrations only enhance the student’s ability to grasp Bunyan’s meaning. Countless participants have acknowledged the benefit of this method. A Study Manual may be borrowed at a seminar, or purchased.

Themes & Issues –¬† An Evangelical Apologetic

Interaction during seminars on The Pilgrim’s Progress has brought forth numerous questions, many of which Bunyan fully intended to stimulate. Sometimes they reflect misunderstanding, but more often they reveal insight that calls for added investigation and the resolution of novel intricacies. Hence Themes & Issues (511 pages) is the result of such discussion and stimulation. It deals with the great doctrinal themes and provocative situations that are integral to The Pilgrim’s Progress. Here are detailed explanations, contemporary applications, and 150 study questions that will help the serious student discover the substance that Bunyan conveys.

“We know Dr. Barry Horner well at the Tabernacle, and have appreciated his work and ministry for years. He is a pastor and leading Bunyan scholar, both at the university thesis level, and in popular presentation. This book incorporates the fruit of a lifetime’s research, but the sole aim is to bring out Bunyan’s masterly spiritual purposes and lessons.

Second only to the Bible for spiritual enrichment, Pilgrim’s Progress is here presented in terms of its great subjects (and debated passages): the concept of Christian pilgrimage, the Gospel, the conversion of Christian, the mode of sanctification, sovereignty and election, the despairing reprobate in the iron cage, views of Christ, and great pastoral counsels. Chapters also cover deeply interesting aspects of the world’s greatest allegory, and how people see it. This is an outstanding book, readable by all, and also eminently usable by study groups.” Metropolitan Tabernacle Review.
