| When
religious people are converted to biblical Christianity, it is common for
them to bring with them remnants of their former beliefs. These old wineskins
can be detrimental to their new faith. On the other hand when a Jew becomes
a Christian he brings with him much that is of foundational importance.
Yet he can also retain shadowy elements that, while being instructive, yet
are no longer to be regarded substantively.
To counter misunderstanding amongst Jewish Christians, the Epistle to the Hebrews was written. There is not the slightest encouragement here for the Jewish Christian to repudiate his Jewishness provided it is grounded in Abraham rather than Moses, and fulfilled in Christ, the mediator of the New Covenant that was initially promised to Israel through Jeremiah. |
